VICTORIAN SASH WINDOWS
AUTHENTIC 2-OVER-2 DESIGNS | CRAFTED FOR PERIOD HOMES

Victorian sash windows, typically dating from 1837 to 1901, marked a significant change in window design from the Georgian period. Thanks to advancements in glass production, sash windows of the Victorian era were able to feature larger panes with fewer glazing bars. The most recognisable layout from this time is the 2-over-2 sash window—one vertical glazing bar creating four large panes across two sashes.

Another defining feature of Victorian windows is the addition of sash horns—the decorative shapes at the base of the top sash. These were originally developed to provide extra structural support to the sashes, which had become more vulnerable as glazing bars were reduced. The horns allowed for a stronger mortice and tenon joint, enhancing durability while becoming a characterful design trait.

HOW WE RECREATE
VICTORIAN SASH WINDOWS

We replicate Victorian windows with exceptional care, combining traditional joinery with advanced double-glazing options to achieve both period accuracy and modern efficiency. Where appropriate, we apply one of two faithful approaches:

HOW WE RECREATE THE VICTORIAN LOOK

We Specialise in Faithfully Reproducing Classic Victorian Styles Using Modern Materials and Techniques. Victorian sash windows are easily identified by their 2-over-2 pane configuration — a result of advancements in glass production during the 19th century. This style used fewer glazing bars, allowing larger panes and giving the window a more open, elegant appearance. To preserve the structural strength of the sash with fewer bars, distinctive sash horns were introduced — decorative, yet practical features that remain iconic to this day.

At PJPS Bespoke Windows, we recreate these elegant windows with precision, using traditional joinery methods and premium materials to ensure authenticity. Whether for full replacement or conservation area compliance, we offer two refined approaches:

FALSE BAR SYSTEM

To maintain slender sightlines without compromising on energy efficiency, we use a false bar system. This involves:

✔️A decorative timber bar adhered to both sides of the double-glazed glass unit

✔️An internal spacer grid between the panes to simulate traditional individual panes

✔️Precision moulding and putty-style shaping to mirror original aesthetics
The result is a visually accurate replica of original Victorian glazing, suitable for listed properties and conservation areas.

SPECIALIST SLIMLINE DOUBLE GLAZING
For projects where enhanced performance is required, we offer sashes manufactured to house slimline, high-performance double-glazed units. These feature:

✔️ Narrow perimeter seals to allow for genuine glazing bars

✔️ Inert gas-filled cavities for increased insulation

✔️ U-values exceeding current building regulation standards
This method allows us to produce timber windows that look traditional but perform to modern expectations — a seamless balance of style and substance.

Let us bring period-correct design and lasting quality to your Victorian property.
